Shocking Act of Animal Cruelty: Kittens Left in the Cold
AUSTIN, Texas — In a troubling incident that has drawn widespread attention, two individuals have been arrested for allegedly abandoning a group of kittens outside during freezing temperatures last month. ShaDiamond McQuieter and Jarell Thomas are facing a total of 16 charges related to animal cruelty, specifically for abandoning the eight kittens found in icy conditions.
The situation unfolded on January 26, when officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a report about the kittens. They discovered the animals in a crate, exposed to harsh weather on Great North Boulevard, next to the northbound MoPac Expressway. Eyewitness accounts indicated that McQuieter and Thomas had placed the crate with the vulnerable kittens in the snow and left them unattended.
Eyewitness Testimonies Raise Concerns
As the officers arrived, a witness approached them to share his observations. He reported seeing McQuieter and Thomas leave the crate on the ground before returning to their apartment, effectively abandoning the kittens. Initially, McQuieter denied having any connection to the kittens. However, she later claimed that she had been caring for them in a vacant apartment nearby, stating, "I didn't know who the owners of the kittens were, but I had been providing them with food and water." This claim was contradicted by the same witness, who revealed he had previously seen the kittens roaming freely in McQuieter's apartment.
A Continuation of Animal Welfare Issues
The distressing nature of this incident underscores a broader issue regarding animal welfare. Elizabeth Ferrer, the Marketing and Communications Program Manager for Austin Animal Services, emphasized that while it's not uncommon for litters of kittens to be abandoned, doing so in dangerous conditions like these is both illegal and ethically wrong. She stated, "These kittens were abandoned first and then they didn't have access, they didn't have adequate shelter, they didn't have water and they didn't have food." Had they not huddled together, survival would have been unlikely.
Legal Proceedings and Community Reactions
Both suspects were taken into custody and processed by the Travis County Sheriff's Office. They posted bond on February 15, with conditions prohibiting them from owning pets aside from those currently in their possession. The eight kittens, now safe, have been taken to the Austin Animal Center, where they have received veterinary care and are reportedly ready for adoption.
This situation has sparked outrage in the local community, highlighting the need for proper education around pet ownership. Responsible pet care is crucial, especially during extreme weather conditions. Organizations like Austin Animal Services are urging the public to seek help from shelters and never to abandon animals.
What Can We Do?
As members of the community, it’s imperative that we advocate for animal welfare and support local adoption efforts. If you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family, consider adopting from local shelters like the Austin Animal Center, where these kittens are now available. By giving these animals a loving home, we not only make a difference in their lives but also promote a culture of compassion toward all living beings.
