Texas Expands Green Spaces with the Acquisition of Silver Lake Ranch
In an exciting development for Central Texas, the state has secured the majestic Silver Lake Ranch, transforming it into Silver Lake State Park—the second-largest state park in Texas after the expansive Big Bend Ranch State Park. Spanning a breathtaking 54,000 acres between Edwards and Kinney counties, this incredible land is now available for public exploration, thanks to a generous donation from the Moody Foundation and additional state funding.
Previously, Silver Lake Ranch was a private property owned predominantly by the Moody Foundation. The foundation graciously gifted 87.5% of its stake to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) while the state purchased the remaining interest for $11.85 million, funded by the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund and the Sporting Goods Sales Tax, both of which were approved by Texas voters.
Ross Moody, a representative of the Moody Foundation, expressed pride in the preservation efforts, stating, “Silver Lake Ranch represents the natural beauty, history, and spirit of our state, and we are honored to make this gift to ensure it remains protected and enjoyed by all Texans for years ahead.” This sentiment of safeguarding Texas' cherished landscapes resonates deeply with outdoor enthusiasts and locals alike.
A Natural Wonderland Just a Short Drive Away
Located approximately 150 miles west of San Antonio, nestled between Rocksprings and Uvalde, this park boasts spectacular scenery that includes steep limestone canyons, rolling hills, and miles of river frontage along the West Nueces River. The lush natural environment is rich with diverse wildlife, including white-tailed deer, dove, javelina, and even the endangered golden-cheeked warbler—an exciting discovery for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
The centerpiece of the park is a serene 30-acre lake that is spring-fed and surrounded by diverse flora, creating an ideal backdrop for various recreational activities. This means that whether you're an avid hiker, camper, or just seeking a tranquil escape, Silver Lake State Park promises adventure and relaxation.
Planning for the Future: Access and Development Phases
This newfound park land is still in its rugged, undeveloped state. TPWD officials have plans to develop the area in phases over the coming years. Initially, visitors may access the park through guided tours and limited day-use opportunities. However, there is plenty to look forward to. Eventually, trails will be established, visitor facilities will be constructed, and expanded recreational amenities—like camping and paddling opportunities—will be added.
Members of the community will have a hand in shaping the park’s future, as TPWD is poised to gather public feedback on recreational opportunities. This collaborative approach not only helps cater to community interests but strengthens the bond between the park and local residents.
A Welcoming Addition to the Texas State Park Family
Texas is known for its vast landscapes and outdoor recreational activities, but this new park acquisition embodies a brighter future for outdoor lovers. David Yoskowitz, TPWD Executive Director, commented on the significance of this new addition: “This is an exciting addition to our state park system, and we are grateful to our partners at the Moody Foundation for their philanthropy and for bringing this slice of the hill country to the people of Texas.”
For the enthusiastic residents of Austin and surrounding communities, Silver Lake State Park represents an opportunity not only to connect with nature but also to engage with their local environment, promoting a healthier lifestyle amidst Texas' stunning landscape.
Getting Involved: How You Can Embrace the Outdoors
For those eager to experience what Silver Lake has to offer, it’s essential to stay informed about progress on the park's development.
