Texas State and North Texas turned their matchup into an offensive showcase, trading explosive plays before the Bobcats used a strong second half to pull away in a game that featured big performances on both sides.
Texas State came out firing, building a 14-0 advantage in the opening minutes. Quarterback Brad Jackson connected with Chris Dawn for a 39-yard touchdown, Dawn's second score of the first half, as the Bobcats immediately put pressure on the North Texas defense.
The Mean Green responded rather than allowing the game to get away from them.
North Texas answered with a touchdown drive and later received a critical goal-line stand from its defense. Texas State appeared positioned to extend its advantage from inside the one-yard line, but the Mean Green defensive front held.
North Texas capitalized on the momentum. Quarterback Tav Jackson connected with Kyle Cook for a 13-yard touchdown, bringing the Mean Green back within one score.
From there, the offenses took over.
Texas State continued producing explosive plays, including a 41-yard touchdown connection to Blake Smith. North Texas repeatedly answered, with Jackson extending plays under pressure and finding receivers downfield.
One of his best moments came on fourth down when he escaped pressure and delivered a touchdown pass to Milliner, allowing North Texas to pull even before halftime.
The second half brought the game's first major momentum-changing turnover.
Jackson scrambled under pressure before losing the football as he went to the ground. Texas State recovered, giving the Bobcats an opportunity to regain control.
The Bobcats increasingly leaned on their running game. Burgess repeatedly broke through the North Texas defense, producing several long runs and keeping drives alive as Texas State began creating separation.
Texas State also found different ways to get the ball into the hands of its playmakers. A short pass to Damen Jackson turned into a 13-yard touchdown after he followed his blocks and broke into the open field.
North Texas refused to disappear.
Jackson delivered another accurate throw under pressure, finding White out of the backfield for an 18-yard touchdown that again brought the Mean Green within one score.
But Texas State had another explosive answer waiting.
Damen Jackson took a carry, bounced outside after initially being bottled up and raced into the open field for another touchdown. The score gave him his fourth touchdown of the game and pushed Texas State's total to 49 points.
North Texas mounted one more late drive, including a long completion to Stevenson that moved the Mean Green deep into Texas State territory. But the Bobcats' defense eventually produced the stop it needed to protect the advantage.
The game provided a sharp contrast to North Texas' previous defensive performance, when the Mean Green allowed only six points against UNLV.
Texas State presented a much different challenge.
The Bobcats combined an explosive passing attack with a productive running game and repeatedly found answers whenever North Texas threatened to regain momentum. For the Mean Green, Jackson and the offense demonstrated plenty of resilience, but Texas State simply produced too many big plays to overcome.
