McLennon Pen Co.: A New Artistic Hub in Austin
With a splash of color and a wave of creativity, McLennon Pen Co. has officially opened its new gallery on West Fifth Street in Austin, marking a significant milestone in the city’s vibrant art scene. After two transformative years operating out of a house gallery in East Austin, the company is shifting gears and expanding its horizons in a more prominent location, and it’s doing so with a big bang!
Welcoming the Community with ‘Tenfold’ Exhibition
On June 5th, the McLennon Pen Co. unveiled its much-anticipated group exhibition called “Tenfold,” which features the work of ten talented artists: Rosie Clements, Andy Coolquitt, Lindsey Lascaux, Peter McRury, Patrick Quinn, Slater Reid Sousley, Audrey Rodriguez, Ben Siekierski, Ashley Swarts, and Alexandra Valenti. This exhibition not only showcases their evolving artistic journeys but also reflects McLennon’s dedication to supporting emerging and established talents at the forefront of contemporary art.
The Vision Behind the Gallery
Founder Jill McLennon expressed her excitement about this new chapter during the launch event, stating, “This moment of moving into a full-fledged gallery space seemed like the perfect time to solidify some of the relationships with artists that have evolved naturally over the last two years of putting on shows together.” McLennon emphasizes the importance of these artists, noting they have begun to shape the identity of the gallery, creating a unique artistic ecosystem that fosters creativity and innovation.
A Space Designed for Inspiration
The gallery is located at 1114 W. Fifth St., Suite 202, in a mid-century modern space that not only has high visibility but also easy access for art lovers across Austin. Visitors are now able to explore the gallery during regular hours, Tuesday through Friday from 11 AM to 6 PM, and weekends from noon to 4 PM. Additionally, free parking is available behind the building, making a visit that much more inviting for the community.
Bridging Connections and Culture
As a part of the mural and design vision for this new location, a custom neon sign by Evan Voyles of The Neon Jungle pays homage to the original pen shop founded by McLennon’s grandfather in 1934. The blend of history and modern artistry creates a cultural bridge that resonates through the space. “It doesn’t feel real yet,” McLennon expressed, highlighting the humbling reality of her commitment to this new location.
Tenfold: More Than Just a Show
The “Tenfold” exhibition aims to foster social connections among artists and art enthusiasts alike. Each piece in the exhibition invites viewers to engage not only with the artwork but also with the ideas and stories behind them. This collection exemplifies Austin's diverse artistic community, encouraging dialogue and exploration of contemporary themes and issues.
The Local Impact of an Artistic Space
Art is often described as a vehicle for change, and McLennon Pen Co. aims to be a catalyst for community engagement and cultural enrichment in Austin. As the city’s art scene continues to evolve, spaces like McLennon’s play a pivotal role in promoting local talent while inviting the community to experience and appreciate creativity in all its forms. As the new gallery thrives, it will likely attract even more local and national attention, enhancing Austin’s reputation as a hub for innovation and artistic expression.
