As San Marcos continues to grow, the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has unveiled its five-year strategic plan, aiming to enhance safety and strengthen community relations. Chief of Police Stan Standridge emphasized the importance of community input, stating that the department's effectiveness can significantly improve with intentionality and thoughtful engagement.

The new strategic plan identifies several pressing priorities for the police department: staffing, professionalism in officers' responses, community outreach, and proactive safety measures. Moreover, the SMPD is the first department in Texas to initiate a comprehensive twelve-month training program aimed at emotional regulation for police officers. "We can't afford to be emotionally hijacked. When police officers are hijacked, then typically we have less than desirable outcomes," Standridge noted.
