The Hideout Theatre and Balance Dance Studios are set to enhance their presence in South Austin, marking a strategic effort by the Austin City Council to support local enterprises through its updated economic development incentive program.

On November 20, the Austin City Council voted to approve these financial packages under the Chapter 380 economic development framework. Balance Dance Studios will receive $547,623 to fuel an ambitious expansion plan at 4544 S. Lamar Blvd. The project, which carries a total investment of $10.52 million, will transform the current space into the Austin Performing Arts Center and Training Complex (APAX). This 33,000-square-foot venue is poised to become a cultural hub, featuring a new theater, green rooms, and multi-purpose performance spaces. The city anticipates that the expansion will generate more than $2.2 million in economic benefits and create over two dozen new jobs.
The Hideout's Transition: A Legacy Continues
The Hideout Theatre, a staple of downtown Austin for 25 years, will receive support of $163,341 as it relocates from its longtime home. Due to recent changes in property ownership and escalating real estate costs, this support is vital for the theater's transition to the Art Hub center at 2801 S. I-35. City staff reported that without this incentive, the renovations would be financially unfeasible. The Hideout aims to re-establish itself in the community with enhanced performance spaces, a coffee shop, and classrooms, ensuring its legacy continues and adapts to new challenges.
