Illuminating Austin: The Return of WaterWork
Austin is once again set to dazzle as the projection art show WaterWork returns to the historic Seaholm Intake Facility on September 26-27. This captivating event merges technology, art, and the natural landscape along the Butler Trail, showcasing the creativity of 15 local artists through stunning video projections and original soundscapes.
The Vision Behind WaterWork
The inception of WaterWork can be traced back to a moment of inspiration experienced by co-curator Emily Eisenhart during an architectural boat tour of Lady Bird Lake. She envisioned transforming the concrete Seaholm landmark into a temporary canvas by utilizing projections instead of paint, thus preserving its historical integrity. “It was kind of a wild idea,” Eisenhart reflects. But with the collaborative spirit of the Trail Conservancy and Design Austin, this creative idea blossomed into a vibrant art show that blends community, environment, and technology.
A Community-Driven Artistic Collaboration
Leading into the second year, WaterWork is more than just an exhibition; it’s a testament to what happens when local artists and civic organizations unite. The artists participating span various disciplines—ranging from analog to digital art—each creating unique pieces tailored for the architectural nuances of Seaholm. With projections ranging from detailed animations emphasizing the building’s intricate stonework to pieces that envelop the entire structure, the event highlights the beauty of collaboration in the local arts scene.
Experiencing the Magic of WaterWork
Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the projections from various vantage points along the Butler Trail, including Auditorium Shores and the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. For a more immersive experience, ticketed boat cruises will offer special views of the projections, though they sold out swiftly last year. Many are also expected to take in the spectacle from their kayaks and paddleboards, making for an unforgettable night spent under the stars with art and nature.
The Sound of Art: A Unique Audio Experience
Adding another layer to this enchanting artistic experience, all video pieces will be paired with sound. Some artists have collaborated with Austin musicians to create original scores, enriching the sensory experience. Attendees can stream the sound on their phones from shore while boat passengers enjoy the onboard audio, depicting a harmonious blend of visual and auditory art.
Why WaterWork Matters
WaterWork stands as a powerful reminder of what local communities can create when driven by a shared vision. As Ingrid Spencer, executive director of AIA and Design Austin, aptly puts it, “Working alongside The Trail Conservancy and this incredible group of Austin-based artists allows us to reimagine public space in a way that sparks wonder, reflection, and deeper connection to the environment around us.” The show not only enriches the cultural fabric of Austin but also reinforces the importance of community engagement in the arts.
