Prepare for Heavy Rain and Possible Flooding in Austin
As Central Texas transitions from a period of warm and tranquil weather to a more dynamic climate pattern, residents are advised to brace for heavy rainfall beginning late Wednesday evening, extending through early Friday morning.
A flood watch is currently in effect across multiple counties. The KVUE Weather Impact Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert due to multiple expected rounds of rain and thunderstorms.
Expected Weather Patterns
Most of Wednesday is anticipated to remain dry, saving energy for a significant wave of storms expected after midnight, particularly across the Hill Country. This area is likely to see the most immediate risk for flooding. Austin and the I-35 corridor may experience fewer disturbances until Thursday afternoon.
Conditions will intensify sharply on Thursday as a Pacific weather system approaches. The chances for rain and storms will rise through Thursday afternoon and into Thursday night, with organized storm complexes possibly bringing additional precipitation into Friday morning.
Rainfall Predictions and Risks
Rainfall amounts are expected to vary significantly across the region. Areas under the flood watch may receive between one to three inches, with the Hill Country possibly experiencing localized amounts nearing six inches. While flooding remains the chief concern, isolated gusty winds, hail, and even a low-end tornado risk cannot be completely ruled out.
Future Weather Forecast Outlook
After a relatively quieter stretch from Friday afternoon to Saturday, another weather system is predicted to approach Austin late Sunday into Monday. This could result in increased rain chances for early next week, positioning Monday as another potential Weather Impact Alert Day.
